Seven Sisters Camera Club

OVERVIEW

These revised rules pertain to all Seven Sisters Camera Club internal competitions. Any new

rules or proposed changes must be submitted to, and agreed by, the committee.

DEFINITIONS

Picture

The visual representation of the external form of a person or thing.

Photograph

A picture that is created by exposing a photo-sensitive medium (digital sensor, film, paper) to light. Photographs for club competitions must be made using a camera, including cameras on mobile phones and drones.

Image

A picture, derived from a photograph, that may or may not have been manipulated in some fashion.

Competitor

A member of the Seven Sisters Camera Club, entering one of SSCC’s internal competitions.

PDI

A projected digital image.

Print

A printed image.

 

ABILITY LEVELS
Intermediate

A member who understands their camera controls and how to compose a photograph, but is still refining their technique.

Advanced

A member who has command of their camera and can compose a pleasing photograph to club standard.

projected digital images (PDI)

General

The following rules pertain to all PDI competitions. If you have any questions then please

contact the Digital Secretary.

• All competitions will be judged and scored by an external, independent judge

• A PDI must not have been previously entered as a print in any competition.

• The maximum allowable size for a PDI is 1600 x 1200 pixels, with 1600 being the longest

side on landscape images and 1200 being the longest side on portrait images (see PDI

Resizing in The Learning Zone).

• PDIs must be saved in the sRGB IEC61966-2.1 colour profile and be no larger than 10Mb.

• PDIs should be titled as you wish it to appear on the screen. Numbering of PDIs is no

longer required or desired, except as stated in the Portfolio competition rules.

• PDIs are to be submitted using the Photo Entry system no later than 17:00 on the

Thursday before the competition (see PhotoEntry Guidelines in The Learning Zone).

League Competitions

The following rules pertain specifically to the 3 PDI League competitions.

  • You may enter up to 2 images per competition.
  • You may not enter an image that has appeared in a previous League competition.
  • League competitions are divided into Advanced and Intermediate groups and judged separately.
  • Images will be marked out of 20 points.
  • The winner of the current season’s Intermediate PDI League competition will be eligible for promotion to the Advanced PDI group This promotion is optional and can be accepted or rejected by the winner, except in the case where the competitor has won the Intermediate PDI League in 2 consecutive seasons.

Set Subject

The following rules pertain specifically to the PDI Set Subject competition.

  • The competition consists of 2 subjects selected by the Digital Secretary. Contact the Digital Secretary if you have any questions regarding the meaning of the selected subjects.
  • You may enter up to 2 images per subject.
  • You may not enter an image that has appeared in a previous Set Subject competition.
  • This is an “open” competition. Advanced and Intermediate groups will be combined and judged as one group.
  • The 2 subjects will be judged separately.
  • The judge will be advised that an image must conform to the given subject.
  • Images will be awarded 1st, 2nd and 3rd (with Commended/Highly Commended at the discretion of the judge).

PDI Portfolio

The following rules pertain specifically to the PDI Portfolio competition.

  • You may choose any 6 subjects from a given list of 12 and submit 1 PDI for each of your chosen subjects and a composite image of the 6 individual PDIs. Contact the Digital Secretary if you require assistance creating the composite image.
  • You may not enter an image that has appeared in a previous Portfolio competition.
  • The images do not need to link in any way (unlike the Print Panel competition).
  • The 12 available subjects are:

Creative (CRE)*

Dereliction (DER)

Landscape (LAN)

Macro (MAC)

Monochrome (MON)

Natural History (NAT)

Night Photography (NIG)

Portrait (POR)

Record (REC)**

Sport (SPO)

Still Life (STI)

Street Photography (STR)

* The “Creative (CRE)” subject should show creativity on the part of the photographer and SHOULD NOT be an image of someone else being creative.

** A “Record (REC)” photograph is an image that portrays a man-made object (in whole or in part), not from an artistic point of view, but purely to show its likeness.

  • Your images should be titled as follows:

Sequence #<space>Image Title<space>3-letter subject (uppercase), for example…

01 Rainy Day LAN

07 Portfolio (for your composite image)

  • Your images will be shown one at a time and then all together to show your complete portfolio. The judge will comment upon and mark your portfolio as a whole.
  • This is an “open” competition. Advanced and Intermediate groups will be combined and judged as one group.
  • The judge will be advised that each individual image must conform to the given subject.
  • Images will be awarded 1st, 2nd and 3rd (with Commended/Highly Commended at the discretion of the judge).

PDI Finale

The following rules pertain specifically to the PDI Finale competition.

  • You may enter a maximum of 2 images from any of the current season’s PDI competitions.
  • You may not enter an image that has appeared in a previous Finale.

Images will be awarded 1st, 2nd and 3rd (with Commended/Highly Commended at the discretion of the judge

Prints

General

The following rules pertain to all print competitions. If you have any questions then please contact the Print Secretary.

  • A print must not have been previously entered as a PDI in any competition.
  • All competitions will be judged and scored by an external, independent judge.
  • Prints to be handed to the Print Secretary by the meeting previous to the competition.
  • All prints are to be labelled (labels from Print Secretary or print your own) with the following information:
    • Name
    • Title
    • Class (Advanced or Intermediate)
    • Competition name (e.g., Print League #1)
    • Date
  • Labels to be placed in the bottom left-hand corner (most external competitions require labels in top right). The placement of the label will determine the orientation of the print.
  • Prints to be mounted on 50 cm x 40 cm boards. Mount colour is at the discretion of the photographer. All prints must be backed with specialist mounting or framing tape (this can be purchased from the club if required). No other tape to be used as this may become unstuck and cause damage to other members’ photos.
  • Prints may be home or commercially printed.
  • PDI versions of prints are to be submitted using the PhotoEntry system no later than 17:00 on the Thursday before the competition (see section PhotoEntry Guidelines in The Learning Zone) with a maximum size of 1600×1200 pixels (see section PDI Resizing in The Learning Zone) and saved in sRGB IEC61966-2.1 (not Adobe RGB) colour profile.

League Competitions

The following rules pertain specifically to the 3 Print League competitions.

  • You may enter up to 2 prints per competition.
  • You may not enter a print that has appeared in a previous League competition.
  • League competitions are divided into Advanced and Intermediate groups and judged separately.
  • Prints will be marked out of 20 points.
  • The winner of the current season’s Intermediate Print League competition will be eligible for promotion to the Advanced Print group only. This promotion is optional and can be accepted or rejected by league winner, except in the case where the competitor has won the Intermediate Print League in 2 consecutive seasons.

Print Panel

The following rules pertain specifically to the Print Panel competitions.

  • A panel should in some way link, either by telling a story or be on a theme.
  • The competition is split into 2 sections…a 3-print panel and a 6-print panel competition:
    • The 3-print panel is open only to Intermediate competitors.
    • The 6-print panel is an “open” competition. Advanced and Intermediate groups will be combined and judged as one group.
  • You may enter only 1 panel.
  • You may not enter a print that has appeared in a previous Panel competition.
  • For ease of display, it is recommended that panels be organised in 1 or 2 rows of 3 prints per row.
  • The 3-print and 6-print panels will be judged separately.
  • Panels will be awarded 1st, 2nd and 3rd (with Commended/Highly Commended at the discretion of the judge).

Print Finale

The following rules pertain specifically to the Print Finale competition.

  • You may enter a maximum of 2 prints from any of the current season’s Print competitions.
  • You may not enter a print that has appeared in a previous Finale.
  • Prints will be awarded 1st, 2nd and 3rd (with Commended/Highly Commended at the discretion of the judge).
