PAST ILLUSTRATED LECTURES...........
MY WILDLIFE - TONY STEVENS
Sussex born photographer Tony Stevens has had a life long admiration for the surrounding area and in particular the wildlife that surrounds us in our beautiful county. Tony believes that the combination of an artists eye view with a good knowledge of nature has been the foremost advantage in the development of his style of self taught nature photography. His main focus is on British wildlife, and he has been rewarded with several highly commended awards in top British Wildlife photography competitions. In his illustrated lecture to SSCC on 17th February entitled 'My Wild Life' he shared with us nature as he sees it. 'WILDLIFE PHOTOGRAPHY MY WAY' Our illustrated lecture on Monday 27th January 2020 was given by Paul Shilliam LRPS ARPS. Paul's first love is wildlife photography, and this will be the main focus of his talk as he tells of the skills and knowledge needed for wildlife photography that seldom appears in books or magazines Based around his experience of photography for over 20 years, he moved from a complete novice up to the standard of wildlife photography he currently enjoys. The presentation provides information about wildlife photography that, while sometimes simple, can make a huge impact on the success of the photographer. Paul also enjoys travel photography and his success in both subjects has included obtaining RPS distinctions for his images. 'My adopted Family'.
SSCC was pleased to welcome back to the club the contemporary photographer Jo Teasdale FRPS who presented her illustrated lecture entitled 'My adopted Family'. Jo last visited our club in April 2018 to present her well received 'Mindful Seeing' lecture, and we looked forward with anticipation to her latest talk. In the concept behind My Adopted Family, Jo explained that her home is filled with objects collected over time - a cherished collection of objects that has become an extension of herself, both physically and metaphorically. Deciding to formalise their existence by cataloguing the collection, Jo set about her project by placing herself in amongst the items, creating a 'family portrait'. |
'Light and Life on the Streets'
On Monday 20th January our lecture entitled 'Light and Life on the Streets' was given by Damien Demolder, a photographer, journalist and photographic equipment expert, speaker, judge and educator. The presentation was most engaging and much appreciated by the audience. Damien specialises in street photography, though his portfolio includes portraits, landscapes, architecture, natural macro and occasionally even wildlife. He has worked in the photographic publishing industry since 1997, including 15 years at the world’s only weekly photo magazine, Amateur Photographer, where he was editor. He writes for regularly for DP Review, and British Journal of Photography magazine as well as occasionally for other UK and international photographic magazines and websites. 'Beyond the Summit'
'Beyond the Summit' is the title of the lecture presented to SSCC on 2nd September 2019 by photographer Chris Palmer FRPS EFIAP DPAGB APAGB who has visited more than 225 camera clubs and judged many regional, national and international exhibitions. He received an APAGB award for services to photography, and has gained various qualifications and awards including in international exhibitions. The presentation 'Beyond the Summit' was entirely a print lecture in which Chris discussed the new challenges he has set himself, the decisions he has made and the photographic directions he is taking in his current work. |
On 18th February photographer David Jenner presented his illustrated lecture entitled 'Night and Day Panoramas and Portfolio'. One of his creative outlets is through the medium of landscape photography, planning his location, capturing the image and in engaging in the digital post production processes, and the presentation included a slideshow of some remarkable images. From nearly a thousand photographs, David created a distinctive panoramic image called Night & Day a scene of Southwold seafront in Suffolk. The whole picture took six months to complete; demanding all of his Photoshop skills and over seventy-two hours to create. We were pleased to be joined by a number of non-members - always welcome to our lecture and presentation evenings. |
Wildlife Through a Lens was the illustrated lecture given by UK's fine art wildlife photographer Tom Way on Monday 18th March 2019. Those attending were enthralled by his professional and lively presentation in which he showed his stunning photographs and explained how he captures his powerful and engaging images. Favouring a fine art style approach to photography, Tom regularly exhibits his work in galleries and exhibitions and has won awards in various international competitions including European Wildlife Photographer Of The Year and the Sony World Photography Awards.
Tom spends much of his time overseas focusing on large mammals around the world. His main passion is Africa where assignments have seen him focus on Elephant and Lion in Kenya and Leopard in Zambia; when these images appeared on the screen a number of 'ooohs' and 'aaahs' resounded around the hall from a very appreciative audience! |
Pictures on a Page'. On Monday 7th January 2019 we were joined in our regular club venue, St John's Hall, Meads Street, by Paul Sanders, former pictures editor at The Times, who gave amost enlightening illustrated lecture entitled 'Pictures on a Page'. Paul's presentation touched on his work at The Times and, at the end of December 2011, his move from the paper to pursue his love of landscape photography and make the transition from Picture Editor to landscape photographer. About his photography Paul says, "Of all the images I create, long exposures are my favourite. Leaving the shutter open for 5 - 45 minutes to allow the light and elements to move gives an ethereal quality that has a painterly feel to the images". |

Up Close, Very Close
Our second 2018/19 lecture, entitled ‘Up Close, Very Close’, was given by COLLEEN SLATER ARPS on Monday 17th September.
Colleen Slater is a creative, macro specialist with an interest in the smaller things in life, whether insects – beetles, spiders, butterflies, moths and ladybirds or flowers, her evocative, atmospheric and intimate images draw attention to the ordinary, often unnoticed things in the everyday world.
Colleen's latest images reveal close up details found in the urban environment, and she gave the audience comprised of both Members and non-member a most interesting presentation.
Our first 2018/19 lecture of the new season, held on 3rd September 2018, was 'Confessions of a Landscape Photographer' by landscape photographer, Paul Mitchell FRPS.
Paul has had numerous exhibitions in London and the South East and has had articles and images published in many photographic magazines. He is a Fellow of the Royal Photographic Society and currently serves on the Fine Art Distinctions Panel. Paul has also been successful in the prestigious Landscape Photographer of the Year competition, winning the Sunday Times Choice Award in 2013, the Urban Category winner in 2015 and commended in 2017. He has also had recent successes in the Outdoor Photographer of the Year and the International Garden Photographer of the Year. |
Mindful Seeing - Jo Teasdale FRPS
An open lecture held on Monday 16th April 2018 entitled 'Mindful Seeing' was given by Contemporary Photographer Jo Teasdale FRPS. A contemporary photographer with a background in Fine Art, over the past 5 years Jo developed her photography to include street photography as well as conceptual art-based projects. She loves the immediacy and the unexpectedness of urban life whilst her project-based work is often poignant and edgy, unveiling elements of our human nature. The first half of her presentation to our club was about 'The Factory', a body of work based on her discovery of a closing down factory stacked full of discarded shop dummies. LEE MILLER : WITNESSING WOMEN AT WAR Our January 2018 lecture given by Antony Penrose was a great success. It was much enjoyed by the many club members and non-members alike who filled the hall to hear his illustrated presentation about his mother, Lee Miller. Our thanks go to Antony for giving us such an interesting evening! ![]() JOE BURDETT - ASTROPHOTOGRAPHY WORKSHOP

![]() WALKING THE COAST OF BRITAIN 2017
ARBS photographer and adventurer Ken Scott set off from his home in West Sussex in February 2017 in an attempt to walk around the British coast. Though plagued by a recurring shin splints injury and having three enforced recovery breaks, he nevertheless completed a round of nearly 3000kms in 107 days over several stints – from Shoreham-by-Sea to Plymouth, from Minehead to the Severn Crossing and around Wales to Caernarfon, from Wirral to the Solway in Cumbria and from Berwick-upon-Tweed back to Shoreham. On Monday 19th February 2018, as SSCC's guest speaker, Ken joined us in St John's Hall, Meads Street and gave a most interesting photographic presentation of that journey. ***
